Kundli matching explained: your score out of 36, Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik dosha

A kundli match gives you one number out of 36, but families and astrologers rarely stop there. Here is how the score is built, which parts carry the most weight, and what the doshas actually check.

Where the 36 points come from

Traditional kundli matching, called Guna Milan or Ashtakoota, compares the Moon's position in the two birth charts across eight categories, or kootas. Each koota has a fixed maximum, and together they add up to 36 points:

  • Varna, 1 point: temperament and outlook
  • Vashya, 2 points: mutual attraction and influence
  • Tara, 3 points: wellbeing, from the distance between the two birth stars
  • Yoni, 4 points: physical compatibility
  • Graha Maitri, 5 points: mental compatibility, from the friendship of the two Moon-sign lords
  • Gana, 6 points: nature, grouped as deva, manushya or rakshasa
  • Bhakoot, 7 points: the relationship between the two Moon signs
  • Nadi, 8 points: traditionally linked to health and children

What the total traditionally means

Below 18 out of 36 is traditionally considered not recommended. 18 to 24 is acceptable, 24 to 32 is a good match and above 32 is excellent. These bands are conventions handed down in astrology texts, not hard rules, and two matches with the same total can be judged differently once the individual kootas are examined.

That is why a good report shows the full breakdown, not just the total. You can get yours in a minute with the free kundli matching calculator: enter both birth dates, exact birth times and birth places, and it shows every koota, the total and a Manglik check for each person.

Nadi dosha: why 8 points can outweigh the rest

Every birth star belongs to one of three nadis: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. If both people share the same nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 out of 8 and the match has Nadi dosha. Because Nadi is the most heavily weighted koota and is traditionally tied to health and children, many families treat Nadi dosha as a serious concern even when the total is above 24.

Traditional texts also list exceptions in which Nadi dosha is considered cancelled, depending on the exact birth stars and Moon signs involved. Whether one applies is a question for an astrologer looking at both full charts.

Bhakoot dosha

Bhakoot compares the two Moon signs by counting from one to the other. Certain positions, where the signs are 6 and 8, 9 and 5, or 2 and 12 places apart, give 0 out of 7 points and are called Bhakoot dosha. As with Nadi, tradition describes cancellations, for example when both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet.

Manglik dosha is a separate check

Manglik dosha does not change the 36-point score. It looks at where Mars sits in each chart, counted from the ascendant. Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house makes a person Manglik in this method. Tradition generally prefers that a Manglik person marries another Manglik person, and many families consult an astrologer about remedies when only one partner is Manglik.

Some astrologers also count Mars from the Moon and from Venus, so two reports can disagree on Manglik status. Knowing which method was used avoids confusion.

Why the exact birth time matters

The Moon moves through one birth star in about a day. If the birth time is off by an hour or two, the calculation can land in the neighbouring star, which can change Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi together. The ascendant changes every couple of hours too, which affects the Manglik check. Use the time from a birth certificate or hospital record when you can, and choose the correct birth place, because longitude and time zone are part of the calculation.

If you only know the date of birth, the age calculator can confirm the exact age, but a kundli without a reliable birth time should be read with caution.

Using the result sensibly

A kundli score is one traditional input among many. Families who follow it usually look at the total, then at Nadi and Bhakoot, then at Manglik status, and consult an astrologer they trust when any of these raises a question. Compatibility in values, communication and life plans is something only the two people can judge.
