Formula

Planet positions (sidereal) = tropical positions − Lahiri ayanamsa; house of a planet counted from the Lagna

Lagna
the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the time and place of birth
Lahiri ayanamsa
the standard correction used in Indian (Vedic) astrology
Nakshatra
one of 27 sections of 13°20′ each, found from the Moon's position

Positions are calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference library used by professional panchang and astrology software.

Worked example

Someone born at 8:30 AM in New Delhi.

  1. Lagnathe rashi rising in the east at 8:30 AM in Delhi
  2. Rashithe sign the Moon was in at that moment
  3. Nakshatrathe Moon's birth star and pada
  4. Chartall nine grahas placed in their houses from the Lagna

The kundli shows these details in a North Indian chart and a table, with a plain-language explanation and a Manglik check.

What a Janam Kundli shows

A Janam Kundli is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born. It is divided into twelve houses, and each of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) is placed in the house and rashi it occupied. Vedic astrology reads everything else, from matching to dashas, from these positions.

  • Lagna (ascendant): the rashi rising in the east at birth. It sets the first house and changes about every two hours.
  • Rashi (Moon sign): the sign the Moon was in. In India, "your rashi" usually means this, and rashifal is read from it.
  • Nakshatra and pada: the Moon's birth star and its quarter. It decides the traditional first letter of a name and is used in kundli matching.
  • Gana, Nadi, Yoni, Varna and Vashya: qualities of your Moon sign and nakshatra that are compared when two kundlis are matched.

How to read the North Indian chart

In the North Indian style the houses never move: the top diamond is always the first house, the Lagna, and the houses run anticlockwise from there. What changes from person to person is the number written in each house, which is the rashi that falls there (1 is Aries or Mesh, 12 is Pisces or Meen), and the planets drawn inside it. A star after a planet means it was retrograde (vakri) at birth.

Manglik check

A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna. The kundli shows which house Mars is in and whether the chart is Manglik by this method. It matters mainly in kundli matching; you can compare two charts with the kundli matching calculator, and read what a guna score out of 36 means.

Kundli Phal: career, business, education, money and marriage

Below the chart, Kundli Phal reads five areas of life the way a traditional astrologer would start: from the house that governs each area, where that house's lord is placed, which planets sit in it, and how strong the planet that signifies it (its karaka) is.

  • Career and job: the 10th house, its lord, and the Sun and Saturn. It also lists fields traditionally suited to the planets involved.
  • Business: the 7th and 11th houses and Mercury, and whether the chart leans towards business or a job.
  • Education: the 5th and 4th houses with Mercury and Jupiter, and subjects traditionally suited.
  • Money and savings: the 2nd and 11th houses and Jupiter.
  • Marriage and partnership: the 7th house, Venus and the Manglik check.

Vimshottari dasha: which period you are in

Vedic astrology divides life into planetary periods called dashas, a 120-year cycle that starts from the lord of your Moon's nakshatra. The kundli shows your current Mahadasha and Antardasha with their dates, the themes each planet is traditionally linked with, and the next few Mahadashas.

Everything here is a traditional interpretation, not a certainty. Use it as a way to understand your chart, and take practical advice for real decisions about career, money or marriage.

Why the birth time matters

The Lagna moves through a whole rashi in about two hours, so a birth time that is off by even 30 minutes can shift the Lagna and move every planet to a different house. The Moon changes nakshatra roughly once a day, so the nakshatra is less sensitive but can still change near a boundary. Use the time from an official record whenever you can.

Things to keep in mind

  • This tool calculates the traditional chart; it does not make predictions about your life.
  • Birth place search covers every city and town in India and common places abroad. Places abroad use a fixed time zone without daylight saving.
  • If you do not know your birth time, the Lagna and houses cannot be relied on; the Rashi and Nakshatra are usually still correct.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my rashi?

Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Enter your date, time and place of birth above; the Rashi (Moon sign) is shown at the top of the result, along with your nakshatra and Lagna.

What is the difference between Lagna and Rashi?

Lagna is the sign rising in the east at your birth and changes every two hours or so. Rashi is the sign the Moon was in and changes every two to two and a half days. Both are in your kundli; Indian rashifal usually uses the Rashi.

Is my birth data saved?

No. Your details are used only to calculate the chart shown on screen and are not stored or linked to you.

Can this kundli tell me about my career or business?

Kundli Phal reads career, business, education, money and marriage from the traditional rules: the governing house, its lord's placement, the planets in it and the strength of its karaka. It explains each point and suggests fields or subjects traditionally suited to your chart. These are interpretations, not guarantees.

How do I find my current Mahadasha?

Make your kundli above with the exact birth time. The Vimshottari Dasha section shows your current Mahadasha and Antardasha with start and end dates, and the next Mahadashas in order.

Can I see my kundli in Hindi?

Yes. After the kundli appears, tap हिंदी to see the chart, rashi and nakshatra names, details and explanation in Hindi.
