- 2"Tap to choose a photo"
- 4"Download photo"
How to use this tool
- Choose what the photo is for, such as passport size, exam photo, signature, or a plain size limit.
- Tap the upload box to pick a photo, drop it in, or paste it with Ctrl + V.
- Check the preview, dimensions and file size. A tick shows when it is within the KB limit.
- Change width, height, fit, format or KB limits under Fine-tune if your form asks for something different, then download.
Formula
Resize to width × height, then lower JPEG quality until size ≤ max KB
- width × height
- the output size in pixels; 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI is 413 × 531 px
- quality
- JPEG compression level, searched by halving between 5% and 92%
- max KB
- the upper file-size limit your form allows
Pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × DPI. Print shops and most forms use 300 DPI.
Worked example
A 4 MB phone photo must be uploaded as a 200 × 230 px JPG between 20 and 50 KB.
- PresetExam photo 20–50 KB
- Crop and resize3024 × 4032 px → 200 × 230 px
- Quality searchHighest quality that stays ≤ 50 KB
A sharp 200 × 230 px JPG within the 20–50 KB range, ready to upload.
Hitting an exact KB size
Online forms often ask for a photo between two sizes, such as 20 to 50 KB, and reject anything outside the range. This tool first resizes the image to the required pixels, then searches for the highest JPEG quality that stays under the maximum, so the photo stays as clear as the limit allows.
If an image cannot get below the maximum, the pixel size is too large for the limit; reduce the width and height. If it stays below the minimum even at full quality, increase the pixels slightly.
Three ways to fit a photo
Forms ask for different things, so the tool offers three fit modes:
- Crop to fill: the photo fills the exact size and the edges are trimmed. Best for passport and exam photos.
- Fit with white border: the whole image is kept and white space fills the rest. Best for signatures, so no stroke is cut off.
- Keep proportions: the photo is scaled down without cropping, up to the size you set. Best for general compression.
Before you upload to a government form
Photo rules differ by exam and change between notifications. Some recent forms, including SSC and UPSC, also ask you to capture a live photo with your webcam during the application in addition to any upload. Always check the size, format and background rules in the official notification for your form, then set the same numbers here.
Use a recent colour photo with a plain light background, your face centred and clearly visible, and no filters or edits.
Things to keep in mind
- Photos are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to CALQEVA or stored.
- Requirements vary by exam and year. Check the official notification before uploading.
- iPhone HEIC photos open only in some browsers. If one will not open, share it as JPG first.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reduce a photo to 50 KB or 20 KB?
Choose a preset with the limit you need, or open Fine-tune and set Maximum size to 50 or 20 KB. Keep the format as JPG. If it still cannot fit, lower the width and height, because fewer pixels need less space.
What is passport size photo in pixels?
Indian passport photos are 35 × 45 mm. At the usual 300 DPI print resolution that is 413 × 531 pixels, which is what the passport preset produces.
Is it safe to resize my photo here?
Yes. The photo is resized by your own browser and is never uploaded to a server, so it stays on your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Why does my form reject the photo even though the size is right?
Forms often check the format and dimensions as well as file size. Make sure the format is JPG if the form asks for it, and that the width and height match exactly. Some forms also check the background colour or require a live photo.
