Planetary positions behind every koota are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris (Moshier algorithm), accurate to a few arc-seconds.

The eight kootas

Ashtakoota means "eight limbs." Each one compares a specific facet of the two charts and contributes a share of the 36-point total. The categories are fixed by tradition; what changes from one match to the next is only the score within each.

  • Varna (1 point) — spiritual temperament and ego compatibility.
  • Vashya (2 points) — mutual influence and control in the relationship.
  • Tara (3 points) — general wellbeing and prosperity, based on the distance between the two birth stars (nakshatras).
  • Yoni (4 points) — physical and sexual compatibility, drawn from each nakshatra's symbolic animal.
  • Graha Maitri (5 points) — mental compatibility, based on the friendship between the two moon-sign lords.
  • Gana (6 points) — temperament grouping (deva, manushya or rakshasa) between the two nakshatras.
  • Bhakoot (7 points) — compatibility between the two moon signs, and the largest single dosha check.
  • Nadi (8 points) — health and progeny compatibility; the single highest-weighted koota, and a dosha here is taken seriously even when every other score is strong.

Manglik dosha

Separately from the 36-point score, each person's chart is checked for Manglik dosha: whether Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Ascendant. Tradition holds that a Manglik person is best matched with another Manglik person, or that the effect is otherwise considered and sometimes offset through remedies — this tool reports whether each person is Manglik; what to do with that information is a matter for family and astrologer, not something a calculator can decide.

Why the exact birth time matters

The Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra (13°20') every day, which works out to about one degree every two hours. A birth time that's off by an hour or two can occasionally shift the calculated nakshatra to the neighbouring one — and Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi are all read directly from the nakshatra, so an inaccurate time of birth can change more than one koota's score. Use the birth time from an official record where possible, not an estimate.

What this tool actually does

The astronomical positions (planets, moon sign, nakshatra, ascendant) are calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris, the same reference-grade astronomical library serious panchang software is built on, using the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa — the standard basis for Vedic charts. The 36-point scoring then follows the traditional Ashtakoota rules exactly as they're classically defined. What the tool cannot do is judge the result for you: it presents the traditional method faithfully, and what weight to give it is a personal or family decision, not a computed one.

Things to keep in mind

  • This follows the Ashtakoota system used in North and South Indian Vedic astrology. Other traditions (Western astrology, other regional systems) use different methods entirely and are not what this tool calculates.
  • A high total score with a Nadi or Bhakoot dosha present is still traditionally treated as a serious consideration, not overridden by the number.
  • Birth place lookup currently covers major Indian cities and common destinations abroad. Timezone offsets for places outside India are stored as a single fixed value and do not account for daylight saving time, which can be off by an hour for birth dates on the other side of a DST change.
  • This is a calculation of a traditional method, not a scientific or medical assessment, and not a substitute for consulting a qualified astrologer for decisions that matter to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Kundli match score?

Traditional guidance treats 18 out of 36 as the minimum generally considered acceptable, 24 and above as good, and 32 and above as excellent. These thresholds are conventions, not hard cutoffs, and a score just below one doesn't traditionally override a strong result on the individual kootas, particularly Nadi and Bhakoot.

What happens if one person is Manglik and the other isn't?

Traditional practice treats this as a factor worth discussing with family or an astrologer rather than an automatic disqualifier — remedies and specific chart considerations are traditionally used to assess and sometimes offset it. This tool reports whether Manglik dosha is present for each person; it doesn't advise on what to do about it.

Is my birth data saved?

No. The names and birth details you enter are used only to compute the result shown on screen and are not stored, logged, or linked to you in any way.

Why does birth time matter so much for this specific calculator?

Several kootas are read from the Moon's nakshatra, and the Moon moves roughly one degree every two hours. A birth time that's off by an hour or two can occasionally place the Moon in a neighbouring nakshatra, which changes the Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi scores. Use the most accurate birth time available, ideally from a birth certificate or hospital record.
