Without credits, CGPA is the simple mean of the SGPAs. The percentage conversion always follows your institution's rule.

Worked example

Three semesters: SGPA 8.2 over 22 credits, 8.6 over 24 credits and 9.0 over 20 credits.

  1. Weighted points8.2×22 + 8.6×24 + 9.0×20 = 180.4 + 206.4 + 180 = 566.8
  2. Total credits22 + 24 + 20 = 66
  3. CGPA566.8 ÷ 66

The CGPA is 8.59, which is about 81.58% using the CBSE multiplier of 9.5.

Converting CGPA to a percentage

There is no single national formula, so the same CGPA can mean slightly different percentages. CBSE has long used percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Many AICTE-affiliated engineering colleges use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Some universities publish their own multiplier, and a few simply multiply by 10.

Use the rule on your own marksheet or in your university's regulations. Employers and universities abroad generally accept the official conversion certificate rather than a formula you applied yourself.

  • CGPA 7.0 = 66.5% (CBSE) or 62.5% (AICTE)
  • CGPA 7.5 = 71.25% (CBSE) or 67.5% (AICTE)
  • CGPA 8.0 = 76% (CBSE) or 72.5% (AICTE)
  • CGPA 8.5 = 80.75% (CBSE) or 77.5% (AICTE)
  • CGPA 9.0 = 85.5% (CBSE) or 82.5% (AICTE)

Converting a percentage to CGPA

Forms and job portals sometimes ask for a CGPA when your marksheet shows a percentage, or the other way round. Reverse the same rule: under CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5; under the AICTE formula, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75. Choose % → CGPA above to do this directly.

  • 60% = 6.32 (CBSE) or 6.75 (AICTE)
  • 65% = 6.84 (CBSE) or 7.25 (AICTE)
  • 66% = 6.95 (CBSE) or 7.35 (AICTE)
  • 68% = 7.16 (CBSE) or 7.55 (AICTE)
  • 70% = 7.37 (CBSE) or 7.75 (AICTE)
  • 75% = 7.89 (CBSE) or 8.25 (AICTE)
  • 80% = 8.42 (CBSE) or 8.75 (AICTE)
  • 85% = 8.95 (CBSE) or 9.25 (AICTE)
  • 90% = 9.47 (CBSE) or 9.75 (AICTE)

Weighted and unweighted CGPA

Most universities weight each semester by the number of credits it carries, so a heavy semester influences your CGPA more than a light one. A simple average treats every semester equally, which only matches your official CGPA if all semesters carry the same credits.

If your university publishes a CGPA that differs from the unweighted average, credits are almost certainly being used. Turn on Weight by credits and enter them to match it.

When the result differs from your marksheet

Small differences usually come from rounding: many universities round each SGPA to two decimals before combining them. Larger differences come from backlog or repeated papers, audit and non-credit courses being excluded, or a grading scale other than 10. Your university's published CGPA is always the official figure.

If a form asks for a percentage of your total marks rather than a CGPA conversion, divide your marks by the maximum marks instead; the percentage calculator does this in one step.

Things to keep in mind

  • Backlog and repeat papers are handled differently by different universities and may change your official CGPA.
  • Some universities exclude non-credit or audit courses from the calculation.
  • Conversions are capped at a CGPA of 10 and a percentage of 100.

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?

Use the rule your institution specifies. CBSE uses percentage = CGPA × 9.5; many AICTE colleges use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Choose CGPA → % above, enter your CGPA and pick the matching rule, or enter a custom multiplier if your university publishes its own.

What is 66% in CGPA?

About 6.95 under the CBSE rule (66 ÷ 9.5), 7.35 under the AICTE rule (66 ÷ 10 + 0.75), or 6.6 if your university simply divides by 10. Use the rule your institution follows.

How do I convert a percentage to CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA combines all completed semesters, usually weighted by credits, to give a single figure for your whole programme so far.
