CGPA Calculator

Combine semester SGPAs into a cumulative grade point average, weighted by credits where your university uses them, and convert the result into a percentage using the rule your institution follows.

How to use this calculator

Without credits, CGPA is the simple mean of the SGPAs. Percentage conversion then follows your institution's rule.

Worked example

Three semesters: SGPA 8.2 over 22 credits, 8.6 over 24 credits and 9.0 over 20 credits.

  1. Weighted points8.2×22 + 8.6×24 + 9.0×20 = 180.4 + 206.4 + 180 = 566.8
  2. Total credits22 + 24 + 20 = 66
  3. CGPA566.8 ÷ 66

The CGPA is 8.59, which is about 81.58% using the CBSE multiplier of 9.5.

Weighted and unweighted CGPA

Most universities weight each semester by the number of credits it carries, so a heavy semester influences your CGPA more than a light one. A simple average treats every semester equally, which only matches your official CGPA if all semesters carry the same credits.

If your university publishes a CGPA that differs from the unweighted average, credits are almost certainly being used.

Converting CGPA to a percentage

There is no single national formula. CBSE has long used a multiplier of 9.5 for class results. Many AICTE-affiliated engineering colleges subtract 0.75 and multiply by 10. Some universities publish their own multiplier, and a few use a direct multiplication by 10.

Use the rule printed on your own marksheet or in your university's regulations. Employers and universities abroad generally accept the official conversion certificate rather than a formula you applied yourself.

Things to keep in mind

  • Backlog and repeat papers are handled differently by different universities and may change your official CGPA.
  • Some universities exclude non-credit or audit courses from the calculation.

How do I convert CGPA to a percentage?

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA combines all completed semesters, usually weighted by credits, to give a single figure for your whole programme so far.
