How to calculate the number of days between two dates
The difference between two dates is the number of days you move forward from the first to reach the second. From 1 January to 31 December 2026 is 364 days, because the count measures the gap between the two dates. Include the end date and it becomes 365, the whole year.
By hand, that means adding the days left in the start month, every full month in between and the days in the end month, remembering that February has 29 days in a leap year. The calculator counts on the real calendar, so month lengths and leap years are always right.
Years, months and days: how months are counted
Months have different lengths, so the years, months and days breakdown counts calendar months rather than blocks of 30 days. 15 March to 15 April is one month, even though some months are 30 days and others 31.
When the start date is a day the end month does not have, the month ends on that month's last day. 31 January to 28 February 2026 counts as exactly one month, which is 28 days. In a leap year the same idea applies: 1 February to 1 March is 29 days in 2024 and 28 days in 2026.
Inclusive and exclusive counting
There are two correct ways to count days between dates, and they differ by one. Exclusive counting measures the gap: from Monday to Friday is four days. Inclusive counting counts both endpoints: Monday to Friday is five days of leave.
Hotels charge by nights, which is exclusive. Leave applications, project durations and event days are usually inclusive. Use the toggle to switch between them rather than adding one by hand.
Working days and weekends
The weekday count treats Monday to Friday as working days and excludes Saturday and Sunday. 1 January to 31 December 2026, counting both days, has 261 weekdays and 104 weekend days.
It does not exclude public holidays, which vary by country, state and organisation, and it does not know about six-day weeks, which are still common in parts of India. Subtract those yourself from the weekday figure.
When people count days between dates
A few situations come up again and again:
- Notice periods and deadlines: the date 90 days after 13 October 2026 is 11 January 2027. Check the count by entering both dates.
- Leave and travel: count leave days with the end date included, or hotel nights without it.
- Age in days: enter a birth date and today's date. For age in years, months and days, plus your next birthday, use the age calculator.

Things to keep in mind
- Public holidays are not excluded from the weekday count.
- If the end date is before the start date, the calculator still gives the gap and notes that the order is reversed.

How do I find the number of days between two dates?

Should I include the end date when applying for leave?
Usually yes. If you are away from 1 October to 10 October, both days are days you are not at work, so that is ten days of leave. Turn on the include end date option for this.
How many working days are there between two dates?
The result shows weekdays from Monday to Friday in the range. Subtract any public holidays and, if your workplace has a six-day week, treat Saturdays separately.
Does the calculator handle leap years?
Yes. It counts on the actual calendar, so 29 February is included in leap years such as 2024 and 2028, and every month has its correct length.
