Mass and weight

Strictly, kilograms measure mass and weight is a force. In everyday use the two words are interchangeable, and every unit here is a unit of mass, so conversions between them hold anywhere.

Units with specific uses

The stone is used for body weight mainly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and equals 14 pounds. The carat is used for gemstones and is exactly 200 milligrams, which is different from the karat that measures gold purity.

A tonne, also called a metric ton, is 1,000 kilograms. It differs from the US short ton and the UK long ton, neither of which is included here to avoid ambiguity.

Common body weights in kg and pounds

Gym equipment, fitness apps and foreign health forms often use pounds, while Indian scales and doctors use kilograms. One kilogram is about 2.2 pounds.

Gold: grams, tola and troy ounces

Gold prices in India are quoted per 10 grams, but older family records and some jewellers still use the tola, and international prices are per troy ounce. A traditional tola is 11.6638 grams, while many jewellers now treat 10 grams as a tola for pricing, so check which one a quote uses.

A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, heavier than the ordinary ounce (28.3495 g) used for food. When converting an international gold price, use the troy ounce. Both the tola and the troy ounce are in the unit list above.

  • 1 tola = 11.6638 g, so 10 g = 0.857 tola
  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g = 2.667 tola
  • To turn a price per 10 g into a price per tola, multiply by 1.16638. At ₹1,00,000 per 10 g, a tola costs ₹1,16,638.

Quintal, maund and ser

Mandi rates, MSP announcements and crop yields in India are quoted per quintal, which is exactly 100 kilograms. A tonne is 10 quintals, so wheat at ₹2,500 per quintal is ₹25 per kg and ₹25,000 per tonne.

The maund (mann) and ser (seer) come from older land and crop records and are still heard in villages and wholesale markets. The standard values fixed in British India, and used here, are 1 ser = 80 tola = 933.1 g and 1 maund = 40 ser = 37.32 kg. Local maunds varied from place to place, so an old document from a particular region may use a different figure.

  • 1 quintal = 100 kg = 220.46 lb
  • 1 maund = 37.32 kg, so 1 quintal ≈ 2.68 maund
  • 1 ser = 933.1 g, a little under 1 kg
  • 1 tonne = 10 quintal ≈ 26.79 maund

Things to keep in mind

  • Carat here means the gemstone mass unit, not the karat used for gold purity.
  • Tonne means the metric tonne of 1,000 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tola of gold?

A traditional tola is 11.6638 grams. Many jewellers today price gold per 10 grams and sometimes call that a tola, so ask which one is meant before comparing prices.

How many pounds is one kilogram?

One kilogram is about 2.2046 pounds. One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms.

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams.

How many kg is one quintal?

Exactly 100 kilograms. Ten quintals make one tonne, which is why a rate per quintal divided by 100 gives the rate per kg.

How many kg is one maund (mann)?

The standard maund is 37.3242 kg, made of 40 ser of 933.1 g each. Older regional maunds were sometimes different, so check the local value if you are reading an old record.
