How to use this tool
- Enter your name as the tenant, the address of the rented home and the monthly rent.
- Choose how you pay rent: UPI, bank transfer, cash or cheque.
- Add the landlord's name, and their PAN if the rent is more than ₹1 lakh a year.
- Pick the first and last month. The current financial year, April to March, is chosen for you.
- Download the PDF, print it and ask your landlord to sign each receipt.
Formula
One receipt per month = Monthly rent, for the 1st to the last day of that month
- Monthly rent
- the amount you pay each month, printed in figures and words
- Receipt number
- counts up from the first number you choose
Landlord PAN is needed when the year's rent is more than ₹1,00,000.
Worked example
Riya pays ₹18,000 a month by UPI for a flat in Mumbai, from April 2026 to March 2027.
- Receipts12, numbered 1 to 12
- Total rent₹2,16,000
- Landlord PANneeded, because ₹2,16,000 is more than ₹1 lakh
- Pages4 A4 pages, three receipts on each
Riya prints the four pages, her landlord signs each receipt, and she submits them with the landlord's PAN to her employer.
What a rent receipt for HRA must show
Employers and the tax department look for the same few details on every receipt. Each receipt this tool makes includes all of them:
- Tenant's name and the address of the rented home
- Rent amount in figures and in words
- The month the rent is for, with exact start and end dates
- How the rent was paid
- Landlord's name, PAN where needed, and a space for their signature
- A receipt number and date
When the landlord's PAN is needed
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh in the year, which is about ₹8,334 a month or more, your employer must collect the landlord's PAN before allowing the HRA exemption. If your landlord does not have a PAN, ask them for a signed declaration saying so, with their name and address, and give it to your employer along with the receipts.
Below that limit the PAN is optional, and the receipts are still valid without it.
Revenue stamp for rent paid in cash
A receipt for a cash payment of more than ₹5,000 usually carries a ₹1 revenue stamp, signed across by the person receiving the money. When you choose cash and the rent is above ₹5,000, the PDF prints a box for the stamp next to the signature line. For UPI, bank transfer and cheque payments the bank record is the proof, so no stamp box is printed.
Paying by UPI or bank transfer is the safer choice: it leaves a record that matches your receipts if the claim is ever checked.
How much HRA you can claim
Receipts prove the rent; they do not decide how much is tax-free. The exemption is the least of the HRA you receive, rent minus 10% of basic pay, and 50% of basic pay in the eight metro cities or 40% elsewhere. HRA can only be claimed in the old tax regime. Work out the exemption, and whether the old regime is worth choosing, with the income tax calculator.
Things to keep in mind
- Receipts must reflect rent you actually paid. Making receipts for rent that was not paid is not allowed and can lead to penalties.
- If you pay rent to a parent, the parent should receive the money in their own account and show it as rental income in their return.
- Keep a rent agreement and payment records along with the receipts; your employer may ask for them.
- Your details are saved only in this browser if you leave the remember option on, so next year's receipts take seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Are rent receipts needed for HRA?
Yes. Employers ask for rent receipts as proof before giving the HRA exemption in your salary, usually in January to March. Without them the HRA is taxed through TDS, and you can still claim it when filing your return if you keep the proof.
Is a revenue stamp required on a rent receipt?
Only for cash payments above ₹5,000, where a ₹1 revenue stamp signed by the landlord is the usual practice. Payments by UPI, bank transfer or cheque do not need one.
My landlord does not have a PAN. What do I do?
If your yearly rent is more than ₹1 lakh, get a signed declaration from the landlord stating they do not have a PAN, with their name and address. Give it to your employer with the receipts.
Can I make receipts for past months?
Yes. Choose any months from the last three financial years. Use the date option to put each receipt on the 1st or the last day of its month.
