How to sign a PDF on your phone without printing it

Printing a document just to sign it, then scanning it back, is the slowest way to return a form. You can sign, fill in and correct a PDF on your phone in a couple of minutes.

Is a signature added this way valid?

Adding your signature as an image is how most people sign offer letters, rental agreements, consent forms and internal documents, and it is what those documents usually expect. It records that you signed, in the same way a scanned signed page does.

Some filings need more than that. Where a process specifically asks for a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or Aadhaar-based e-sign, an image of your signature is not a substitute. If you are unsure, ask the organisation receiving the document what they accept.

Sign in four steps

Open Edit PDF and choose the document. Tap Sign, draw your signature with your finger, and tap Add signature. Drag it onto the signature line and use the corner handle to make it the right size. When everything is in place, tap Download PDF.

The document is edited in your browser, so the signed copy is created on your phone and is never uploaded.

Use your real signature instead of a finger scribble

Finger-drawn signatures often look different from your usual one. For a closer match, sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, take a photo in daylight, and add it with the Image button. With Remove white paper switched on, the paper becomes transparent, so only the ink appears on the document.

Signing on a laptop instead

The same steps work on a computer, but drawing with a mouse or trackpad rarely looks like a real signature. On a laptop, the photo method gives a much better result: sign on paper, take a photo with your phone, send it to yourself, and add it with the Image button. Save that cut-out signature file somewhere private so you can reuse it next time.

Filling in blanks and fixing mistakes

Use Text to type your name, date or address on the lines, choosing a size that matches the printed text. To change something already printed, such as a wrong date, use White-out to cover it, then tap on the white box with Text selected and type the correct value.

White-out hides what is underneath visually; it does not delete it from the file. That is fine for correcting your own form, but not for hiding sensitive information you do not want someone to recover.

Initials on every page

Rental agreements and some contracts ask you to initial every page, not just sign the last one. Draw your initials with Sign, place them in the corner of the page, then move to the next page with the arrows and add them again. Keep them in the same corner on every page so the document looks consistent.

A quick check before you sign

Signing digitally is fast, which makes it easy to skip the reading. Before you tap Download:

  • Read the whole document, including the last page, where dates and amounts often sit.
  • Check that names, addresses, amounts and dates are correct, and fix typos with White-out and Text.
  • Add the date next to your signature if the document has a place for it.
  • Keep a copy of exactly what you signed and sent.

Sending several signed documents

When a company asks for an offer letter, an NDA and a declaration, sign each one, then combine them with Merge PDF if they want a single file. If the email bounces because the attachment is too big, Compress PDF will usually bring it well under the limit.
