How to convert WebP to JPG

Many websites now serve images as WebP, a format made by Google that is smaller than JPG at the same quality. When you save such an image, some photo editors, older apps and upload forms refuse it. Choose JPG above, add the .webp file and download: the picture is the same, now as a .jpg that opens everywhere.

If the WebP has transparent areas, such as a logo or sticker, JPG cannot keep them, so they are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG instead.

JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you choose?

Each format suits a different kind of image:

  • JPG: best for photos and for anything you upload to a form or send on WhatsApp. Small files, accepted everywhere, but no transparency.
  • PNG: best for screenshots, logos and images with text or transparent backgrounds. Lossless, so every pixel is kept, but files are larger.
  • WebP: the smallest files for websites and blogs, with transparency. Supported by all current browsers, but not by every app or upload form.

PNG to JPG to make files smaller

A photo saved as PNG can be several times larger than the same photo as JPG. Converting it to JPG at 85–90% quality usually cuts the size a lot with no visible difference. If a form also has a strict KB limit or exact pixel size, use the Image Resizer afterwards to hit it exactly.

What changes when you convert

The picture and its size in pixels stay the same, except for very large images over 8,192 pixels on a side, which are scaled down so phones can process them. Hidden photo details such as the camera model and GPS location are not copied to the new file, which is better for privacy but means the original date taken is not kept.

Animated WebP and GIF files are converted as a single still image, using the first frame.

Things to keep in mind

  • Images are converted in your browser and never uploaded to CALQEVA.
  • iPhone HEIC photos open only in some browsers. If one will not open, share it as JPG from your phone first.
  • A few older browsers cannot save WebP. If that happens, the tool tells you; choose JPG or PNG instead.

How do I convert WebP to JPG for free?

Choose JPG under Convert to, add your .webp file and tap Download. It is converted on your own device, so there is no upload, no watermark and no limit.

Will converting reduce the quality?

Converting to PNG keeps every pixel. Converting to JPG or WebP compresses the image; at the default 90% quality the difference is not visible in normal use. Lower the quality only if you need a smaller file.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add as many images as you like, then download each one or use Download all. Your browser may ask once to allow multiple downloads.

Why does my transparent image get a white background?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
